The Purple Tutu ballet gives classes to girls from four to 10 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Launched in 2014 by Holland McDowell, 20, the savvy-student was still in school when she founded the organisation after learning that people with Down syndrome have great flexibility but lack core strength. Holland, who now studies at George Washington, said: “In science class we learnt how people with Down syndrome have amazing flexibility but lack core strength - which really lends itself to ballet as it involves both.
