The helpless elephants were grappling, barely able to keep their trunks above water in the deep sea about one kilometre off the coast in Trincomalee, when luckily the naval officers on routine patrol spotted them. Responding promptly to the situation, the Navy officers deployed three boats and a team of divers who quickly jumped into the water with ropes and guided the jumbos towards the shore. "A navy Inshore Patrol Craft which was on routine sea patrol noticed the jumbos in distress and alerted the Department of Wildlife in Trincomalee.
